Always be prepared! Check to make sure you have all of the supplies needed for the DIY before you begin.

Boil one gallon of water in a kettle. Pour the package of RIT dye into the bottom of your large glass bowl and pour the boiling water over the dye.

Put on your rubber gloves and stir the dye and water with a wooden spoon. Make sure to stir thoroughly until all dye is dissolved—you don’t want any powder left behind! Once completely dissolved, add the laundry detergent and continue to stir.

In a sink, wet your t-shirt to the point you wish the dye to reach. We suggest half to 3/4 of the way up. Twist out all excess water to ensure nothing drips.

Lower your t-shirt into the dye solution, up until the point that you dampened it. This initial dip-dye needs to be very quick, as the dye absorbs very fast. Literally dip and pull out to the next section. This can be as thin or wide as you like.

Let the color develop in the second section for 20 seconds and pull the t-shirt up to the last section. Hold this last section for 30 seconds or more, depending on how saturated you want the color to be.

Pull the t-shirt out, making sure to keep your hands on only the part with dye, so to not spread color to the white section. Twist out all excess dye.

Head back to the sink and run the dip-dyed section of the t-shirt under lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Twist out all excess water, again keeping hands clear of the white section.

Leave your t-shirt to dry and when ready, wash it on its own to make sure it does not leak any excess dye on your other clothing. Add a pair of white jeans for the perfect summer look!

His latest installation arrived in Sendai, almost 2 years after it was ravaged by the devastating tsunami.

Staged within an old warehouse, and utilizing its high ceilings, Iyama hung hundreds of rolls of masking tape from the ceiling, delineating space and affecting the flow of people. He then proceeded to cover the entire floor with masking tape as well, including all objects in his way, like bicycles.

You’ll love this hexagon quilt stamps...

Into stamps and stitches? You’ll love this hexagon quilt stamps tutorial from Mollie at Wild Olive.

Materials you’ll need:

First you need some carving material. You can use large erasers…who knew? You’ll also need a sharp knife and a stamp carving tool. For making stitches, the tiniest tip is best.

Trace a hexagon onto the eraser, then draw some stitches around the edge.

Use the knife to cut away the edges. With a soft eraser like this, you should be able to slice right down through the sides with ease.

Gently carve the “stitches”. You’ll find that often one end of a stitch is pointed (where you started the stitch) and one end is blunt (where you ended the stitch). You can fix this by either 1) start at each end, going only half way to the middle, or 2) start some stitches from one side and some from the other, mixing the direction to make it less obvious.

Grab a stamp pad and try out your stamp. If anything doesn’t look quite right, carve…fix…stamp again. And remember that this is an eraser, so avoid rubbing the stamp on your paper or it will start to wear down.

Now you can stamp a whole collection of hexies! You could even use these as a base, and then draw on extra details like stripes, polka dots, flowers, etc.! Or if you’re feeling ambitious, carve extra designs right into the stamps.

Draw a design as you did with the stitches. Use the sharp knife to outline the shape you want to cut away.

5 Years of Hand-Drawn Sandwich Bags

Your parents may have slipped the occasional note or doodle into your lunch bag, but graphic designer David LaFerriere has taken it one step further, adding a new surprise drawing to his kids’ sandwich bags nearly every day. He started snapping photos of the mini works of art and now has a Flickr set boasting over 1,100 photos!

LaFerriere started making sandwich bag drawings for his two sons back in 2008. His doodles often use imperfections in the bread or the sandwich itself as elements, as in this fish about to eat a bread “bubble” or this man digging up dinosaur bones buried under the sandwich’s crust. As a whole, the drawings are cheerful, often quite funny and exactly the kind of pick-me-up any kid could use in the middle of a tough school day.

Check out his Flickr set to see all 1,108 photos (and counting)!

Inspired by the way the sky peaks through skyscrapers, Lamadieu illustrates quirky cartoons within these spaces. What a great reminder to look up once in awhile and realize that art is everywhere.

The most exhausting day of my life, but also one of the best. Hiked around Presidio on a nature walk, went to Baker Beach, played games, had BBQ & potluck, made s’mores, sang songs around the campfire, and ended the day watching the sunset with all of the kids’ families. Feeling blessed today.

Photographer Fong Qi Wei transforms flowers simply by dismantling them. Her series Exploded Flowers captures a variety of flowers picked apart petal by petal then carefully arranged. The meticulously arrayed petals closely resemble mandalas or celestial bodies. Each composition underscores the unbelievable symmetry packed into often small flowers. However, there is also subtle medical atmosphere to the photographs, as if they were autopsied flowers or like pinned butterflies. Her series has garnered her some awards including 2nd place in the International Photography Awards’ Nature category.
